Trailer Reaction: Tomb Raider

Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.

The second trailer has released for the new Tomb Raider movie coming out this year, and while it definitely has my attention, I’m forcing myself to stay cautiously optimistic. Let’s be honest, more times than not, movies based on video games…suck. No matter how good the trailer looks, it’s always smart to go into the movie without any expectations.

That being said, this trailer is awesome and a dramatic improvement from the first one. The Destiny’s Child remix/cover of Survivor fits perfectly for the mood and story of the film. I don’t think the trailer would have had as much punch without it. Alicia Vikander, known for movies like The Danish Girl and Ex Machina, is a fantastic choice to play Lara. Walton Goggins looks equally good as the villain but has always been difficult for me to take completely serious for some reason…he just always seems to have crazy eyes.

It’s important to note that this movie isn’t based on the older Lara Croft games, but on the more recent Tomb Raider which released back in 2013. It’s an origin story of an inexperienced Lara, who finds herself in over her head on a strange island. What unfolds is an incredible story of survival as Lara has to continually dig in and find the will to survive the island or face certain death. I remember starting the game on a Friday night, and by Sunday morning I had finished it.

I’ve always thought that the story of that game would make an excellent movie, and now we will get to see it. I saw 3 or 4 scenes taken directly from the game. The digital effects look a little sub par in places, especially the plane crashed over the waterfall, but I’m willing to look past it if the story is as satisfying as the game was.

Tomb Raider comes out March 16th. Does this movie interest you? Did you like this trailer more than the first trailer? Let me know.
